English II Course Outline

  1. First Semester 
    1. Short story unit (6 weeks)
      1. Basic lit terms review and new
      2. Elements of a story application
        1. Teacher selected
        2. Self-selected (by student)
      3. How to study lit vs. read a story - understand purpose
        1. Notetaking - study sheet 
        2. Vocabulary - ways of dealing with unfamiliar words
        3. Using the Internet to aid comprehension
    2. Drama (5 weeks)
      1. Intro to unit (2 days)
      2. 12 Angry Men (1.5 weeks) 
      3. Julius Caesar (2 weeks) *as a whole group of sophomores. 
      4. The Glass Menagerie (2 weeks) *as a whole group of sophomores. 
    3. Poetry (4 weeks)
      1. Intro (2 days)
      2. My opening poems (1 week)
      3. Poetry terms
      4. Student explications (2 weeks)
    4. Giver (2 weeks)
      1. Review of lit terms
      2. Utopian and dystopian lit
      3. Essay writing - 1-2 lessons to prep for in-class test essay such as 3-part essay and 3-part paragraph.
      4. Possible stemming project from novels such as describe an ideal…(educational system). 
  2. Second Semester
    1. Nonfiction (5 weeks)
      1. Bio and autobio (1 week) bridge from story to essay
      2. Literary essay (2 weeks) open form essay
      3. Academic essay (2 weeks) closed form; serves as bridge to writing & comp skills unit
    2. Novel (4 weeks) - To Kill a Mockingbird (TKMB)
    3. Writing and Composition Skills (9 weeks)
      1. Approach to comp skill is both a build-up and break down of sentences.
        1. Build-up = sentence combining, imitative writing, spontaneous in-class writing such as progressive story writing, quick topics, and group writes.
        2. Breakdown (parse)= ID parts of a sentence, phrases, clauses, & diagramming.
        3. Continue LAs
      2. Approach to writing
        1. Two major writing assignments
          1. Technical writing: Gormilton, employment communication
          2. Summary and response writing. 
          3. Fourth Quarter book project is an essay that is an analysis of elements in the story with a research component
          4. *presentation - career paper formal presentation 
        2. Students self-evaluation apply comp skills to their own work
          1. Sentence openings looking for variety (or pattern)
          2. Grammatical classification
          3. Readability scores
          4. Three part paragraph structure ID with highlighters
        3. Using Research sources with MLA formatting
  3. Other Considerations
    1. LAs - yearlong.
    2. Vocab study
      1. Contextual within lit units
      2. Technical - all four lit units
      3. Vocabulary.com accounts. 
      4. Academic vocab - within lit units especially essay and comp unit
    3. Book Projects - 1 per semester.
      1. Semester 1 is pre-approved students’ selection.
      2. Semester 2 is teacher assigned students obtained.
